There is an article over at XML databases called Inspirational Technology: The pain of over abstraction. There was a discussion of Java APIs being too hard. I tend to agree, but I posted with a simpler dom4j example. dom4j is fast becoming my favorite Java XML API (mostly for its tight XPath integration).
